Plastic pollution: Can the past save the future?

Ask anyone over 50 and they tell you that in the past we had recycling sussed but somewhere along the way we all forgot everything we knew. And now we’re paying the price.

As the quest to cut down on plastic use continues we are tempted to look back fondly to a period when the solutions we’re all talking about now were commonplace. In 1975 for example, 94 per cent of milk came in glass bottles, but today this is as low as just four per cent. Today milk comes in single use plastic bottles. Furthermore, a great deal of 1975’s milk was delivered by milkmen driving electric milk carts, which is now a thing of the past.

The good news is that milk in glass bottles is back on the rise with around one million bottles a day being delivered or bought in shops.
