Have a break… well you know the rest!

In 1935 the world got a new taste sensation and 90 years later we are still enjoying the opportunity to ‘Have a break…have a Kit Kat’. The Kit Kat was first introduced by Rowntree’s, a confectionery company based in York, England. It was launched in 1935 as “Rowntree’s Chocolate Crisp.” The initial design featured four fingers of wafer, coated in milk chocolate. The idea behind the four-finger format was to make it a convenient and shareable snack, as consumers could easily break the fingers apart.

During World War II, the production of Kit Kats was temporarily halted due to rationing. After the war, in 1949, the brand underwent a name change and became “Kit Kat.” The name is believed to be a reference to the Kit-Cat Club, a literary and political club in 17th-century London. The change was made to give the product a more modern and catchy name.

In 1988, Rowntree’s was acquired by Nestlé, a Swiss multinational food and beverage company, and Kit Kat became part of the Nestlé family. The brand continued to expand globally, with different variations and flavours introduced to cater to diverse consumer preferences.

Over the years, Kit Kat has become one of the most recognizable and beloved chocolate brands worldwide. The distinctive “Have a Break, Have a Kit Kat” slogan, introduced in the 1950s, emphasized the product’s association with taking a break and enjoying a moment of relaxation.

Kit Kat’s success can be attributed to its unique combination of crispy wafer layers and smooth chocolate coating, as well as its iconic shape and convenient breakable format. The brand has continued to evolve with the introduction of limited-edition flavours, such as Matcha Green Tea, Chunky varieties, and regional variations in different countries.
