The 112 year old company was founded by a woman called Melitta Bentz who made her first paper filter in her kitchen. Today the company is a world leader in the manufacture of three ply microfibre papers needed to make hospital standard equipment.
Intriguingly Melitta is ahead of other German competitors as they struggle to make enough facemasks to satisfy demand. Other firms have tried everything it seems with the most bizarre being ‘The Playmobil mask and others made from women’s bras.
As we face a summer of sunshine and the prospect of wearing facemasks in shops, restaurants and on public transport it is interesting to see how the world is adapting to the ‘new normal’ of a post COVID-19 world. For example, in Germany, one company called Melitta, who manufacture paper coffee filter papers has adapted their production line to make facemasks on the same production line, using the same materials. It even looks somewhat similar to your usual coffee filter papers, but fits neatly over mouth, nose and chin.
