5 facts about sugar you probably didn’t know
1: Originally sugar was considered to be a spice and not a sweetener alongside spices such as Ginger, Cinnamon and Saffron
2: There are at least 61 different names for sugar from Sucrose to High Fructose corn syrup. Most of these names have been devised by food manufacturers to disguise the amount of sugar in individual food products. Best advice, always read the contents label if unsure about the amount of sugar in any product.
3: Sugar is everywhere. Over 70 per cent of all food sold in supermarkets contain some form of sugar.
4: White refined sugar has ZERO nutritional benefit. Cane or brown sugar doesn’t do much better but may contain some trace minerals.
5: Fruit juices contain more sugar than an average soft drink such as a cola.
